Rouse let go as G-C volleyball coach

GREENFIELD — Rita Rouse will not return for a fourth season as the Greenfield-Central volleyball coach after complaints from a number of parents apparently swayed the administration.

Rouse said Friday that her contract will not be renewed at Monday’s school board meeting, following her refusal to step down.

“I was asked to resign, but I’m not quitting,” said Rouse, who added that she will not attend the board meeting.

Greenfield-Central administrators confirmed that they’ve heard from parents who did not agree with Rouse’s coaching style.

Superintendent Dr. Linda Gellert said the school was “carefully investigating all complaints, because I think that’s a responsible response.”

Rouse believes she has treated all players fairly.

In a letter sent to volleyball parents Friday, Rouse explained, “As coaches, we thought we had a great season and we sincerely thought most of our players felt the same way. But, as you know, there have been many rumors since the end of the season (regarding her job status) almost three weeks ago. I can now put those rumors to rest ... the administration has decided that they want to take the G-C VB program in a new direction and that direction does not include me as the coach.”

Rouse led the Cougars to a 24-12 record this season, which included a Hancock County Tournament championship. The Cougars went 13-21 last year and 17-14 in Rouse’s first season in 2010. Previously, Rouse went 283-124 in 11 seasons at Morristown, where the Yellow Jackets reached four state finals fours and won the 2003 Class A state championship.

She left Morristown for an assistant coach position at Marian University, where Rouse stayed briefly before deciding to return to the high school game. Rouse replaced Kelli Marchello at G-C. Marchello resigned after her one and only season in 2009.

In the email Rouse sent to parents Friday, she added, “To the many (parentes) who have supported and encouraged me, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You understand the concept of working together to create a positive team experience and example for our young ladies. Your kindness and sincerity have touched my heart and I will always remember just how amazing parents can be. You have been a blessing and inspiration to me.”
