INDIANAPOLIS — In a season full of breaks that were hard to come by, Mt. Vernon was again victimized by Baseball Gods Saturday afternoon in its 3A Sectional 26 semifinal game against Guerin Catholic at Brebeuf Jesuit High School.
With two outs in the bottom of the third inning and his team clinging to a 2-1 advantage, Guerin left fielder Danny Kennedy reached over the fence and robbed MV first baseman JonMichael Weaver of a two-run home run, preventing the Marauders from seizing the lead and signifying Mt. Vernon’s ultimate demise.
The Golden Eagles used timely hitting and proficient pitching to end MV’s season Saturday, winning by a 6-2 decision.
Guerin got the ball rolling in its first at-bat against MV starter Matt Lohrey. Adam Glaze singled to start the game and following a ground out, moved to third on Adam Neidlinger’s single up the middle. Greg Sobecki doubled to bring in Glaze, landing runners at second and third. Following a hit batsman, Lohrey induced a strikeout and fielder’s choice to end the inning.
