GREENFIELD — Five people were injured in a head-on collision late Monday afternoon in a rural area southeast of Greenfield.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two-vehicle accident at CRs 600E and 250S around 4:20 p.m.
Capt. Robert Campbell said the most severely injured was Rigoberto Mendoza-Soriano, 23, of Anderson. He suffered serious internal and head injuries; as of 8:30 p.m., Mendoza-Soriano was still unconscious after having been transported to an Indianapolis hospital.
Mendoza-Soriano was a back-seat passenger in a car traveling northbound on CR 600E. The vehicle carrying four men was attempting to pass a truck and trailer in a no-passing zone of a hilly area when it collided head-on with a car traveling southbound.
Campbell said it appears as though the northbound vehicle didn’t see other vehicle because of the hill.
The driver, Antonio Santiago-Soriano, 44, Anderson, had lower leg injuries. The front-seat passenger, Augustine Ramirez, 33, Anderson, had internal injuries; another back-seat passenger Martin Soriano, age unknown, Anderson, suffered a broken leg.
Campbell said the men were driving from their job in Morristown back to Anderson.
The driver of the southbound vehicle, Karen Trunbo, age unknown, Carthage, was transported by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital. Campbell said she underwent surgery for internal injuries.
The other victims also were transported to Indianapolis hospitals.
