GREENFIELD — When Dillon Gregory was a little boy, he dreamed of being a pilot. His cousin flies for Delta, and Gregory was certain he would follow in his footsteps when he got older.

All that changed when Gregory, 17, joined the cadet program at the Greenfield Fire Department.

The program, which is funded by donations, gives students a behind-the-scenes look at the fire service, while also providing them with basic training they can take with them if they decide to make firefighting a career.

It didn’t take long for Gregory, a senior at Greenfield-Central High School, to come to just that conclusion. He now has his sights set on a full-time career doing the work his mentors have shown him is one-of-a-kind.
