42nd Annual IHSAA Gymnastics State Finals
Where: Worthen Arena, Ball State University, Muncie.
Time: Opening ceremonies at 12:30 p.m. Competition at 1 p.m.
Who: Teams from Ft. Wayne Carroll, Columbus East, Columbus North, Connersville, Ft. Wayne Dwenger, Jay County, Merrillville, Portage and Valparaiso, as well as 20 individuals from non-qualifying teams, including New Palestine’s Kate Fee.
Defending team champion: Portage (112.600 points).
Returning 2013 individual champions: None. Portage’s Mackenzie Barcelli (all-around, floor exercise) and Valparaiso’s Morgan Algozine (vault, uneven bars) graduated. Owen Valley’s Anna Watkin won the balance beam title last year as a freshman with a 9.575, but she did not compete in this year’s state tourney due to an ankle injury.
Fee: The New Palestine junior heads to Muncie after winning the sectional and regional titles on the balance beam. She also placed fifth in the regional all-around and will compete in all four events Saturday.
Fee’s first event will be the beam, and she is the second overall competitor. After the beam, Fee will be on floor exercise and vault, and she’ll end the day on the uneven bars.
Among 48 gymnasts entered on the State Finals beam, Fee and Logansport’s Kelley Platt posted the top regional score: 9.525.
