GREENFIELD — When Jason Scott joined the Hancock County Explorer program in the mid-1980s, he felt right at home.

Then a teenager, the officer-to-be was surrounded by a group of like-minded youths with an interest in law enforcement. Using the program as a springboard, he would go on to become a jail officer at the same department where he’d gotten his feet wet as a teen.

In 2005, Scott collapsed and died in his home from what the family believes was a heart attack. He was 34 and left behind a wife and 7-year-old daughter.

By then, the Explorer program had long since disbanded.
