How you can help: Pigs against Cancer is going on at Eden Elementary through Sept. 27. Members of the public are welcome to contribute, even if they don’t have a child who attends Eden. Contributions may be dropped off or mailed to the school at 8185 N. Ind. 9, Greenfield, 46140. Checks should be made out to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.
GREENFIELD — Every fall since 2011, cheerful pink piggy banks have been a staple decoration in Eden Elementary classrooms.
The banks, named and decorated by each class, collect coins the students bring to school in recognition of September as Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. The money raised goes to organizations aimed at fighting cancer.
But this year is different. The pigs are not only a fundraiser but a celebration for the boy who inspired the project in the first place. Trevor Smith, now a kindergartner at Eden, just finished his last dose of chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Trevor, 6, has been receiving treatments since he was diagnosed at age 3.
