For the second straight week, Eastern Hancock fought off early adversity to pull away to a big conference win.
The Class A No. 8 Royals beat Milan 52-27 Friday to — at 3-0 — become the only undefeated team in Mid-Indiana Football Conference action.
Eastern Hancock (4-0 overall) and Milan (1-3, 0-1 MIFC) were tied 14-14 early in the second quarter, and the Royals were hanging on to a 28-21 advantage before taking over the road contest.
“Tough first half, but our defense really figured it out in the second half and caused some huge turnovers,” said EH coach Pat Echeverria, who noted that his unit finished with around 300 yards rushing and 180 yards passing. “Milan was a very physical team, like we knew they would be, and it took us a second to make sure everyone was taking care of their responsibilities.
“Once we started playing good solid team defense, they had trouble moving the ball and we started creating turnovers.”
On offense, Spencer Gilbert accumulated most of the Royals’ 300 rushing yards. The senior running back had two touchdowns on the ground and one through the air from quarterback Logan Splater.
