HANCOCK COUNTY — Betty Foster is grateful her son is on city water. That way, when she had to depend on him for water while she waited for a new well to be dug at her Charlottesville home, she didn’t have to worry about his water supply going dry, too.

This summer’s record drought has caused a steep drop in the water table. Some of the area’s older, shallower wells, like Foster’s, went dry. Foster ended up on a local well driller’s waiting list.

“They got to me as soon as they could, but there’s just so many on the list,” Foster said.
