GREENFIELD — A Shirley man who caused a car crash that severely injured his daughter and two other children has pleaded guilty to neglect charges and will serve a five-year sentence on home detention.
Thomas “Rick” Taylor Jr., 50, admitted to police he’d been drinking beer before the accident at the intersection of CRs 1000N and 675E in May 2012.
Taylor was westbound on CR 1000N in a Chevrolet Silverado when he went through a stop sign at the intersection with CR 675E without stopping, according to police reports.
Melanie Jones and her daughter, Ella, who was then 8 years old, both of Pendleton, were northbound on CR 675E in a Chevrolet Impala when Taylor went through the intersection. Jones did not have a stop sign and hit the pickup, police said.
The vehicles came to rest in a field at the northwest corner of the intersection after the impact.
Taylor had three young children – his son, then 10, and his daughter, then 11, and their friend, then 11 – in his pickup with him at the time of the accident.
