Driver dies after hitting parked semi on I-70

GREENFIELD — A fatal accident shut down a five-mile stretch of Interstate 70 for four hours early Sunday.

Police said a Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Tyler J. Johns, 26, of Spiceland, veered off the side of eastbound I-70 around 4:45 a.m. and crashed into the back of a parked semi.

The semi, driven by Phillip Jones, had broken down and was sitting off the eastbound shoulder near the rest park at the 107-mile marker, three miles east of the Greefield exit.

Police are still investigating to determine what caused Johns, who was pronounced dead at the scene, to leave the roadway. There were no witnesses to the crash.

Both lanes of eastbound I-70 from mile markers 104 to 109 were shut down as police investigated the crash. All lanes were reopened around 8:30 a.m.
