NEW PALESTINE — Morgan McKinney will be a junior this year at New Palestine High School. You may know that. She maintains a 3.7 GPA and played on the school’s basketball team. You may know that, too. What may surprise you is her life outside of school.

Morgan is a rodeo cowgirl — and a good one. She begins the 2012-2013 National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) season on a roll. Earlier this summer, during just her first season as a member of the NHSRA, she qualified for and competed in the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in pole bending.

“I was surprised to make nationals my first year in high school rodeo,” admits McKinney. “I didn’t know what to expect when we left to come to here.”

She had a lot of time to ponder things on the three day, 1,362 mile journey, from her hometown in Greenfield to Rock Springs, Wyo., for the July event.

On the final day of the week-long rodeo, the soft spoken Midwestern girl summed up her experience by stating, “It was pretty cool.”
