GREENFIELD — Judy Laird got a little surprise while ringing a bell for the Salvation Army outside of Kroger in Greenfield – a quarter-carat surprise, to be exact.

Laird was collecting donations for the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle campaign one recent day when an unknown woman asked if she could donate jewelry.

“She said she had a diamond in her purse and wanted to donate it to the Salvation Army,” Laird recalled. “Nobody had ever asked me that.”
