GREENFIELD — Mt. Vernon boys’ golf coach Caleb Zelencik has been waiting all season for his team to find its groove.
Less than a week after MV posted a nine-hole season-best score of 159 in a tri-meet win over Daleville and Frankton, the Marauders seem to have finally found their stride.
Tuesday at Arrowhead Golf Course, the Marauders won the Hancock County Golf Meet for the third year in a row.
Mt. Vernon, who carded a team score of 340, prevailed by the slimmest of margins, as Greenfield-Central recorded a 341 to take runner-up. New Palestine was third (347) and Eastern Hancock (384) fourth.
As luck would have it, MV’s win last Wednesday on its Senior Night also came at Arrowhead.
“It’s always good to win championships and a county championship is no different,” Zelencik said. “We have had a roll going. I knew this year would be tough.”
Austin Alexander, who recently completed his sophomore year at MV, was the match medalist with a 78.
