GREENFIELD — Now in his seventh season heading the Mt. Vernon girls’ golf program, coach Caleb Zelencik can’t remember being undefeated in non-invitational play this late in the season.

After all, a constant impediment year after year has been Greenfield-Central, who entered Tuesday’s Hancock County Championship at Arrowhead Golf Course winners of the event seven years running.

But, behind a balanced team effort, Mt. Vernon stopped that streak and prevailed over New Palestine, Greenfield-Central and Eastern Hancock to move to 12-0 in non-invite play in 2012.

MV tallied a score of 182 — the same total the Cougars achieved to win last season — in the nine-hole competition, six ahead of second-place NP. G-C (187) took third and EH (231) was fourth.

NP’s Abby Poole carded a 42 to garner medalist honors.

“I’ve never had a start like this with the girls. The girls have kept a level head. They go out and compete every day,” Zelencik said. “They haven’t been, ‘Oh, we’re (undefeated).’ They just work every day.

“We try not to let the record get to our heads because it’s golf, anything can happen.”
