MUNCIE — Thanks in part to three fumbles and a defense that couldn’t stop Muncie Central’s big-strike capability, Greenfield-Central’s football season was nearing an end, down 22-7 with nine minutes remaining in its sectional quarterfinal game.
Already on an eight-game losing streak, the Cougars could have folded.
“I felt my clock ticking away,” Greenfield-Central linebacker Tim Perry said. “I felt my senior year going away. I just had to kick it in.
“It’s been so long. I forgot what it felt like to win.”
Perry and his teammates will never forget this Friday night.
With a pair of huge fourth-quarter sacks by Perry, including a safety, and two late touchdowns, G-C pulled off a 23-22 victory to advance to the sectional semifinals.
The host Bearcats (6-4) posted their best regular season since 2006 this year, and it looked as if they’d claim postseason victory No. 1 with relative ease against Greenfield-Central.
