NEW PALESTINE — Near the end of the first quarter Friday, Greenfield-Central girls basketball coach Doug Laker wrote a simple message on his dry erase board during a timeout: ‘We’re hurrying.’

As soon as the Cougars got their composure in a Hoosier Heritage Conference matchup at New Palestine, they made sure the Dragons lost theirs.

Greenfield-Central forced 31 turnovers and outscored the Dragons 35-9 over the middle two quarters en route to a 52-32 victory.

The squads combined for 13 turnovers in the opening quarter, including six by the Cougars, who led just 10-8.

“We were playing too fast,” Laker said. “I told them, ‘Just relax. We’re getting looks. We’re getting steals.’

“It was the tempo we wanted, but we weren’t executing.”
