NEW PALESTINE — After an uninspired showing at Thursday night’s sectional prelims, Nathan Graber and Drew Logan gathered their Greenfield-Central teammates in a locker room at New Palestine Natatorium prior to Saturday’s championship round.
Graber and Logan eschewed a fire and brimstone-laden speech in favor of a dialogue heavy on athletic simplicity: do your best, and do your job.
“Drew and I talked to them about how it’s not about what the score is at the end of the meet; it’s about everyone trying their hardest in the meet,” Graber said. “I think everybody put everything they had in it (Saturday) and it really paid off.”
On the strength of eight event wins and 14 top-3 finishes, the Cougars claimed their fourth straight sectional crown, outlasting a strong Thursday-Saturday showing from runner-up Mt. Vernon. G-C, which posted winning margins of 98, 96 and 107 in its three previous sectional triumphs, notched a 48-point victory (485-437) Saturday and will send nine swimmers to Day 1 of the State Finals Friday at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.
Mt. Vernon’s Dixon Tierney qualified in three events, including the 200 medley relay, while New Palestine’s Grant Gish advanced to his third State Finals.
