GREENFIELD — While those putting the finishing touches on their Halloween decor might not be ready to think about Christmas just yet, the Greenfield Police Department is already gearing up for its annual holiday program.

Cops 4 Kids gives at-risk children whose families might not otherwise do much gift-giving over the holidays a chance to go shopping alongside local law enforcement officers.

It takes about $12,000 to fund the program; the department currently has about $1,000 and is looking to the community to donate toward the needed amount, said administrative assistant Sallie Turner, who is organizing the event.

Each December, officers, dispatchers, administrative staff members and their spouses have joined forces to take children shopping for clothes and Christmas gifts at Greenfield Wal-Mart. The day typically
