Complete-game performance eluding Cougars

WHITELAND — When Greenfield-Central can put 32 minutes together, it can be a scary basketball team.

But until it can begin to do so, results such as Saturday’s 71-60 defeat at Whiteland will likely continue to accumulate.

The Cougars (0-2), who have dropped 21 of their last 24 games over three seasons, caught fire with 25 points in the final 6:06 of the contest.  But that came after the Warriors were very comfortably ahead, 57-35.

“We didn’t play with any energy in the first half,” G-C coach Josh Johnson said. “And we didn’t pay any attention to anything that we talked about, such as detail and the scouting report, so I’ve got to do a better job getting the guys ready for games.”

Whiteland (1-1) shot extremely well, working for easy baskets as it gradually built its lead.  The Warriors were 10-for-15 (66.7 percent) in the first half and ended at just under 62 percent (21-for-34).

The Warriors started with a 6-0 run, led 35-18 at the half and were up by as much as 22 before the Cougars began to close the gap.

It also didn’t help G-C that three of its players picked up three fouls before halftime. Whiteland made 26-of-30 free-throw attempts for the night.

Largely because the Warriors were making their shots, the Cougars did not come up with a non-team (dead ball) rebound until four seconds remained in the first half, by Tyler Batton.

Senior Derek Conley led G-C’s late charge with 16 points in the final minutes — five field goals and 6-for-6 at the line.  He ended with a game-high 25.

“The second half, we played with a lot more emotion,” Johnson said. “We put a lot more energy and effort.  They were enjoying it, they were playing hard and they were playing together.

“We made mistakes and bad decisions, but we didn’t whine about them or cry about them.”

The Cougars got to the line just once (two shots) in the first half, but in the second were 12-for-17.

“When we were down as many points as we were, we had to score as many points as we could with the clock stopped,” Johnson said. “And we had some wide-open three-pointers that we made and those were made available because we were attacking.”

Junior Jordan Keener sank five of the eight three-pointers G-C hit, and ended with 21 points.

Freshman Tate Hall made a pair of threes as well, and had eight points.
