In the minds of many, Mt. Vernon’s season starts Saturday.

Everything up to this point has been a prelude to what’s next. The top-ranked team in Class 3A, the Marauders are 20-5. They’re undefeated against 3A teams, they ran the table in the Hoosier Heritage Conference and they won their three sectional games by a total of 153 points. They didn’t take a gun to a knife fight; they rolled into a pillow fight in a tank.

But none of that matters right now.

Fair or not, this team won’t be evaluated on what it’s accomplished so far. MV will be judged on what it does from here on out. Winning Saturday’s regional at Lebanon would make the Marauders’ year, no matter what happens in the semistate or beyond. If they lose, a missed opportunity will be the season’s lasting memory.
