FRANKLIN — New Palestine’s girls’ basketball team may be dominated by seniors, but it walked into Franklin’s gymnasium Tuesday night as a debutante.

NP’s Sectional 13 matchup with Whiteland was the school’s first in the state’s highest tier, Class 4A. The Dragons had been in 3A in each of the IHSAA’s previous 14 multi-class tournaments.

The only class that mattered to the Dragons afterward was that they outclassed the younger and smaller Warriors 45-41, largely with a heady defensive and rebounding effort.

As Bethany Murrell, one of five senior starters, sparked NP (11-10) with 18 points and nine rebounds, the Dragons advanced to Friday’s semifinals against Franklin (11-9).
