'Emotional rollercoaster': Police officers make their way along a Hoosier highway in a past ride. Cyclists will cover about 1,000 miles over 13 days later this summer. (Tom Russo/Daily Reporter)

GREENFIELD — The annual Cops Cycling for Survivors ride is about 1,000 miles long. It stretches 13 days, draws more than 100 cyclists and raises as much as $40,000 each summer to benefit families of fallen officers.

But for all those statistics, those who ride each year say there’s no putting a number on the lives touched by the event.

“For some of the families, … it’s just the highlight of their year to see us come through their town,” said Indiana State Police Master Trooper Rich Crawford, of New Palestine, who helps organize the ride each year. “It’s an emotional rollercoaster for everyone that’s involved.”
