FORTVILLE — Vanessa Bishop set aside a box of photos, drawings and old papers – personal effects from a storage unit that had been auctioned off just an hour earlier. The original owner of the locker – or the stuff inside it, anyway – had fallen six months behind in rent payments for the space.

Bishop, manager at Fortville’s Storage Now, was in contact with the owner, but without a way to recoup the back rent, she added the unit to the list for Storage Now’s fall storage locker auction.

State law allows storage facilities to auction off units whose renters more than 90 days delinquent on payments. The practice helps businesses make back some of what’s owed to them off the sale of the items left inside.
