GREENFIELD — If the line to enter Greenfield’s Gander Mountain store when it opens later this spring resembles the line to fill out employment applications, business will be booming.

The national outdoor equipment retailer is on schedule for a late May opening for its store in the 2100 block of North Barrett Drive, just north of Home Depot in Greenfield, and store manager Tim Ledford said there has been no shortage of those hoping to work there.

“We have gotten over 400 applications,” Ledford said Wednesday. “And we’ve gotten a lot of quality people to apply.”

The 45,600-square-foot store will employ an initial workforce of about 90 for the first several months after opening, Ledford said, and managers have been working long hours to go over the applications and talk to prospective employees.

“We have quite a few days scheduled,” he said. “We do three interviews every half- hour for 11 hours.”

Brick and mortar construction is keeping pace with the staffing effort as well, Ledford said.

“We’re moving along. They’ve got the floors poured, the walls up and the electrical done. We should be in by May 4 to start putting things together for a May 20 opening,” he said.

Ledford said the local community has embraced Gander Mountain’s arrival and provided significant support as the operation moves toward its opening.

“We’ve been working with the (Greenfield Area Chamber of Commerce), and the chamber has done a phenomenal job providing us with facilities and connecting us with the community,” he said.

The company currently has seven stores in Indiana with two existing locations in the Indianapolis area: one in Greenwood and another in Castleton.
