Lauren Brand and Kyla Leary are the last women standing, or swinging, among Hancock County tennis players.

The Greenfield-Central No. 1 doubles team defeated New Palestine’s Michaela Hurd and Emily Moeller 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at North Central Tuesday to advance in the IHSAA state tournament as individual sectional champs.

The Cougars’ and Dragons’ duos qualified for Tuesday’s match after making it out of the team sectional last week undefeated. Mt. Vernon beat G-C and New Palestine to win the team title. (No. 1 singles players and No. 1 doubles teams that finish the team sectional undefeated stay alive in the postseason tourney).

Tuesday, state-ranked Cathedral ended the Marauders’ season by a 5-0 score in the regional semifinal, also at North Central.

A few courts over in the individual tourney, seniors Brand and Leary beat their senior counterparts from New Palestine in what served as a 2012 rubber match.
