NEW PALESTINE — When Sugar Creek Township Fire Department Division Chief John Begovich first joined the fire service 29 years ago, he had no idea where the profession would lead him.

On Feb. 1, he’ll assume the lead role as interim fire chief of the township’s two fire stations. He is replacing retiring Chief Gerald Morganthall, who will officially step down at the end of January after seven years of service.

As the fire department’s division chief of safety and personnel, Begovich said he works closely with the chief on daily operations, but he will do a little more as acting chief.

“Now, I am also going to be taking a look at things from the strategic view, more of a big picture type of thing,” he said. “It dovetails with what I am doing now.”

Township Trustee Bob Boyer made the announcement official at the end of the township’s meeting on Tuesday.
