Barton, Splater too tough for Owls

MUNCIE — One practice was all the Eastern Hancock boys basketball team needed this week, and it was ready to go Friday night.

Any concerns the Royals had after this week’s miserable weather that shut the school down went away during a definitive first quarter against Muncie Burris at Ball Gym.

EH strung together 17 unanswered points after spotting the Owls a 1-0 lead, and coasted 69-39 with an extremely well-balanced attack both in scoring and rebounding.

The Royals improved to 5-2 and captured their fourth straight, improving upon the program’s longest streak since the 2010-11 squad won 10 in a row. It was also the first time in two years EH has allowed fewer than 40 points in consecutive games.

“Anytime you cannot practice in several days, it’s going to be rough,” said EH coach Aaron Spaulding, whose squad prepped only on Thursday. “We obviously were ready to play (Friday). We did a nice job and we got out to a good start.”

And it continued throughout the contest, in which 11 of the 12 Royals scored and had at least one rebound. The EH bench outscored the starters 36-33.

The Royals’ two bigs were, indeed, as big as they’ve ever been.

Starter Logan Splater had 10 points and as many boards (five offensive), once again cleaning up like he did two games ago at Southwestern.

Sophomore Tom Barton spelled Splater superbly, with 12 points and seven rebounds. Barton topped his previous career scoring high by eight, in this season’s opener against Northeastern.

“Our inside kids, both Logan and Tom, combined for 22 points and 17 rebounds, and they had a very effective night out of that spot,” Spaulding said. “Both kids did a very nice job scoring and rebounding.”

The Royals also attacked from the outside, hitting 40 percent of their 3-point tries. Backup Ryan Speas connected three times from beyond the stripe, and Isaiah McCormick hit two treys.

Speas ended with nine points and McCormick eight, his first scoring of the year. The senior guard missed the first five games and was scoreless in his season debut last Saturday, a 31-30 win at North Decatur.

Splater had six points during the Royals’ initial run, with both Barton and Derrik Noel adding four and McCormick a 3-pointer.

EH expanded its cushion modestly in the second quarter, from 17-4 to 31-14. The Royals blew it wide open in the third, outpointing Burris (0-6) 18-7.

Barton scored eight in a fourth quarter in which Spaulding rested his first team for tonight’s home game with Oldenburg Academy (5-4).

“Obviously, if you score that many points it makes you hard to guard,” Spaulding said. “Any given night, you’ve got kids that can contribute, and hopefully we can keep that going.”

Notes: Burris is one of three teams that EH had faced that are winless this season (Anderson Prep Academy, Southwestern). ... The Royals’ JV defeated Burris 46-41, as Austin Lacy scored 14, Bryce Spegal 12 and Cole Allen 11 for EH. ... Tonight, the Royals’ 2003 regional-champion team will be inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame, along with 1972 graduate and former multi-sport star David Smith.
