FORTVILLE — Town officials might have drastically reduced the size of their controversial annexation proposal, but the opposition from landowners has hardly abated. Unofficially, in fact, it’s nearly universal.
An attorney for residents in the slimmed-down annexation area filed petitions last week to oppose it. The final count included 89 of the 97 property owners in the affected area, or about 92 percent. The petitions still must be certified.
“That’s kind of off the charts,” said Stephen Buschmann, who is representing residents who oppose being absorbed into the town. He filed the paperwork Friday at the Hancock County clerk’s office, setting in motion a process that will land the proposal, which includes 644 acres, in court.
