GREENFIELD — Last week, dispatcher Ronda Bryant answered a call to 911 from a man whose idea of an emergency was needing the phone number for a local bar.

Bryant, who has been dispatching for 10 years, informed the caller he hadn’t dialed directory assistance. The caller was undeterred.

“He said, ‘I know. I’ve already called them, and they don’t have it,’” Bryant said. “I’m like, ‘I’m gonna give it to you, but don’t call back.”

It’s situations like those that tell Bryant there hasn’t been enough 911 education over the years. With a new program called Hancock County 911 for Kids, local dispatchers are trying to change the trend.
