GREENFIELD — For a man who twice was dug from the World Trade Center rubble on 9/11, it’s little wonder New York City Fire Department Lt. Joe Torrillo sees the event not only as one of America’s singular tragedies but also as one of its greatest rescue efforts.

Of the approximately 18,000 people inside the Twin Towers that morning, about 15,000 were evacuated in the 90 minutes between the first attack and when the buildings fell, Torrillo said.

“In reality, it was a great rescue effort,” he said.
