GREENFIELD — In a matchup of two basketball unbeateans, the Greenfield Junior High girls eighth grade team defeated Eastern Hancock 48-30 Monday in the Hancock County Tournament semifinals.
In one of the best-attended junior high school basketball games in recent memory, the Cougars outscored the Royals 27-14 in the second half to advance to the championship.
Greenfield (19-0) will face Doe Creek Thursday at 7 p.m. at Doe Creek Middle School in the county title game. Doe Creek defeated the Mt. Vernon eighth graders in the other semifinal Monday.
The Eastern Hancock girls entered Monday’s matchup with 19 wins, the most ever for any EH girls basketball program at any level. But, Greenfield’s Madison Wise (21 points, five steals, five assists) and Katie Helgason (nine points, eight steals, six assists) helped send the Royals to their first loss of the season.
Emiley Carlton led the Royals with 16 points.
