Coach: Russ Wiley, 6th season.
Home Course: Hawk’s Tail, Greenfield.
2013: Hancock County Tourney, 3rd place, 189 (9 holes); Hoosier Heritage Conference, 7th place, 432; Sectional, 7th place, 411.
2014 Varsity (w/grade): Makenzie Fisk (11), Megan Garner (10), Kim Miles (11), Amanda Edwards (10), Clara Bogan (11), Lindsey McCord (9).
Outlook: All-county honoree and regional qualifier Makenzie Fisk returns to lead a G-C group that is on the rise. Sarah Maloney, who would have been G-C’s only senior this season, transferred due to a family relocation. That leaves Fisk and fellow juniors Kim Miles and Clara Bogan, sophomores Amanda Edwards and Megan Garner and freshman Lindsey McCord together for at least the next two seasons. “With no seniors, we’re building,” said coach Russ Wiley, who lost Nicole Morley to graduation. “I would expect us to be better than last year. Losing Nicole hurt. She was No. 2 for us a lot of the year. But we’re hoping the overall improvement of everyone else can accommodate for that.” … Fisk carded a nine-hole 40 to finish third in last year’s Hancock County Tourney and advanced out of the sectional with an 88. Wiley expects Fisk to compete for those championships again, as well as all-conference honors. “Those are definitely reasonable goals,” he said. “She usually has a full summer on the girls’ summer tour, playing a lot of difficult courses. And those are usually from the men’s tees, which is longer than what we see during the season.” … Among the Cougars’ other returnees, Garner was second behind Fisk among the Cougars at the county and sectional meets last season as a freshman. “Megan went to several camps this spring and summer,” Wiley said. “She broke 100 in the sectional last year, and on that (Old Oakland) course for a freshman, that’s pretty good. We’re hoping to build on that.”
Teeing Off: The Cougars open the 2014 campaign Saturday at the Greensburg Invite at the Greensburg Country Club.
