COLUMBUS — A veteran journalist has been tapped to lead the newsroom of The Republic, which is a sister newspaper of the Daily Reporter.
Tom Jekel, a career journalist who has served in several managerial roles in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, began his duties as editor of The Republic in Columbus this week.
Jekel most recently served as publisher and editor of The Times-Reporter in New Philadelphia, Ohio. He formerly was an executive with the Noblesville Ledger and Topics Newspapers in central Indiana. Under his leadership, the Ledger in 2004 and 2008 was named Blue Ribbon Newspaper – the state’s highest journalism award – by the Hoosier State Press Association.
Jekel’s appointment is part of a management realignment at Home News Enterprises’ newspapers in southern Indiana. Scarlett Syse, formerly editor of the Daily Journal in Johnson County, has assumed the newly created role of group editor over The Republic, the Daily Journal, the Brown County Democrat and The Tribune in Seymour.
Columbus-based HNE, which also is the parent company of the Daily Reporter, bought the Tribune earlier this year.
