Trine University Sports Information

Tyler Murphy of the Trine University men’s soccer team was named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men’s Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week, earlier this month, after picking up victories in three matches from Sept. 5-11.

Murphy, a junior from Greenfield, and Greenfield-Central High School, had six points in the wins and helped the Thunder rebound from their first loss to ranked Otterbein. On Monday, Sept. 5, Trine defeated Franklin by a score of 2-1, then the team posted wins against Heidelberg, 3-0 on Sept. 9 and 2-1 on Sept. 11 against Benedictine.

Murphy netted a penalty kick goal that ended up being the game-winner against the Grizzlies to start the week on the right foot. He then notched his second goal of the 2022 season versus the Student Princes of Heidelberg. Murphy collected a rebound and put it in the back of the net to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. In the Benedictine match, Murphy was credited with assists to Jared Cromwell and Ryan Cote that aided in the 2-1 win.

In his career, Murphy has won four MIAA Athlete of the Week awards and is closing in on the school’s NCAA D-III era records for most points and most goals scored. He currently sits two scores away from tying the goals record at 27 and six points from reaching Nooh Aljabaly’s record of 65 career points.
