FORTVILLE — The tile deck of the pool still shined sparkling white, blended with speckles of black and gold paint.

The atmosphere remained lively, as a full house overrun with Mt. Vernon insignias cheered on the home team.

But for Emily and Mark Logan, it was a different kind of swim meet.

They still paced the long side of the pool opposite the stands, mixing encouragement with strategy.

They still conferred seemingly by ESP — before, during and after races.

But Tuesday night, the pair walked into Mt. Vernon Middle School as visitors, donning the blue-and-gold of the rivals across the county.

“I’ve been on this pool deck since I was eight, so it was a little different,” said Emily, her face wearing a reflective smile.

In June, Emily and Mark left their longtime positions as head girls head coach and assistant girls coach with MV to take over the vacant swimming positions at Greenfield-Central.

Now, Emily heads the G-C girls team and Mark leads the boys.

Emily, a Mt. Vernon graduate, was an assistant under June Mueller beginning in 1994 and became head coach in 2008, the same time Mark joined the staff as assistant/co-head coach.

“As we’re driving up the road, it was a little emotional. But I tell you what, it was good to see them all,” offered Emily, won captured three sectional titles and two Hoosier Heritage Conference championships with the Marauders. “It was a good feeling to know they’re doing well and we got to be a part of that.

Mark expressed similar sentiments.

“I don’t know what the word is…there was emotion there,” he explained. “To come back after building the program, it was fun to come back and see everybody.”
