For the past two seasons, the focus of the Hancock County swimming scene has been on the Greenfield-Central boys team, and for good reason. The Cougars enter their 2012-13 campaign as the two-time defending Hoosier Heritage Conference and sectional champions.
And yet, perhaps unbeknownst to many, the Mt. Vernon girls squad has won three of its past four sectional meets and two of the last four HHC titles.
The current edition returns three state qualifiers from last season: seniors Jessica Blackburn and Jessica Hantz as well as junior Maddie Powell. That trio comprised three of the four spots on the sectional-champion 200 freestyle relay team that placed 20th at the state meet.
That relay squad provided the Marauders with their only win during the Feb. 11 sectional meet, a contest that came down to the last race and culminated with MV’s two-point triumph over Connersville.
Sixteen different swimmers scored points that day for Mt. Vernon, a reflection of a unit whose strength lies with the collective, rather than with individual swimmers.
After a suitable candidate wasn’t found following Emily (head coach) and Mark Logan’s (assistant coach), summer departure for Greenfield-Central, MV boys coach Tom Shaver voluntarily assumed interim command of the girls program in September.
