INDIANAPOLIS — The Mt. Vernon softball team erupted for 18 hits on Monday night en route to a decisive 22-1 five-inning, run-rule victory over host Pike.
The visiting Marauders wasted little time in Indianapolis, building an 8-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Up 8-1 after the first frame, the Marauders scored three or more runs in each of the next four innings to even their season record to 1-1.
Mt. Vernon was coming off an 8-5 loss to Zionsville at home on March 30.
The Marauders quickly put the season-opening setback behind them with seven extra-base hits, including a solo home run by Hannah Baldwin in the second inning.
Easton Wampler led the Marauders at the plate, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. She connected for a double and a triple.
As a team, Mt. Vernon had three doubles and a trio of triples.
Mia Robbins and Macey Cox both finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Maddison Taylor was 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and a triple. Cox added the Marauders’ other triple.
Molly Buck (1-for-4) and Karlee Franklin (1-for-1 with two RBI) both had doubles.
Drew Fithian went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Shelby Rakosky was 1-for-1 with an RBI, Hannah Baldwin finished 1-for-1 with two runs, two walks and an RBI. Haley Kissee added an RBI.
The Marauders worked Pike pitching for six walks overall with only two strikeouts.
Cox, Kissee and Riley Hasseld (1-for-3, two runs) each recorded a stolen base apiece.
Buck picked up the win, pitching 5.0 innings with one walk and 11 strikeouts.
Baseball
Cougars fall to Wapahani
The Greenfield-Central baseball team committed five errors which led to eight unearned runs for host Wapahani on Monday night.
The fielding miscues resulted in an eventual 12-2 loss for the Cougars, who dropped to 1-1 on the season after the six-inning, run-rule defeat.
Senior Carson Gibson finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base for the Cougars, while Parker Stanley went 2-for-3. Austin Oden went 1-for-1 with a double and two RBI.
Gavin Atwood was 1-for-3 and Joey Roland went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. The Cougars two runs were scored by Kalob Martin and Nick Grandstaff.
