NEW PALESTINE – Officials with the Community School Corporation of Southern Hancock released information late Thursday stating one of their students had died.

Cameron Thompson, 16, a freshman at New Palestine High School, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, Jan. 21.

Capt. Robert Harris of the Sheriff’s Department said a preliminary investigation indicates the teenager died from natural causes. An autopsy was scheduled.

Officials said the teenager apparently had not been feeling well the past couple of days.

Wes Anderson, community relations director for the district, said leaders were saddened to hear of Cameron’s death.

“This is a very difficult time for our students, staff, and the Southern Hancock community,” Anderson said. “Our thoughts are with Cameron’s family during this difficult time.”

District officials will have counselors available for all students and staff at New Palestine High School on Friday, Jan. 22.

Community resource information will be available for students in all schools through counselors’ offices.

Funeral services for Cameron are pending.
