GREENFIELD — With six days until Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3, those who have requested an absentee ballot by mail can ensure it’s received in time by returning it to the Hancock County Election Office in person, rather than using the mail.

Hancock County Clerk Lisa Lofgreen has warned that it may take at least seven days for a ballot to arrive via the postal service. In order for an absentee ballot to be counted, it must arrive by noon on Election Day. Ballots that are postmarked before Election Day but arrive late cannot be counted.

Completed ballots may be returned to the election office, located on the second floor of the Hancock County Courthouse, during business hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If a voter wants a family member or someone else to return their ballot for them, a form allowing them to do so is also available at the election office.

Voters who have requested a mail-in ballot but now wish to vote in person either early or on Election Day can do so; however, they must bring their uncompleted ballot with them to a vote center and fill out a form to invalidate it before voting.

Voters who want to check on the status of their ballots may call the office at 317-477-1109.

In-person early voting continues at five locations around the county through Nov. 2. Any registered Hancock County voter is eligible to vote early at any location.

As of Monday afternoon, Oct. 27, the county had processed a cumulative 22,534 votes, including 17,050 in-person early votes cast through Sunday. The remaining votes came from mail-in ballots that had been returned.

Over 1 million Hoosiers requested an early ballot in this year’s election, according to the Indiana secretary of state’s office.
