HANCOCK COUNTY — A woman accused of a home burglary and impaired driving with two small children in her vehicle was sentenced last week in Hancock County Circuit Court.

Kaylee Anita Faye Brown, 26, Greenfield, had been charged with seven counts, including a Level 4 felony count of burglary of a dwelling stemming from an incident Wednesday, April 15. The most serious charge against her carried a sentence of up to 12 years in prison.

A plea agreement called for Brown to plead guilty to three of the seven counts for a total sentence of 7½ years. She will spend 545 days on home detention and receive credit for 176 days already served. The rest of her sentence will be spent on probation.

Judge Scott Sirk accepted terms of the agreement on Thursday, Oct. 22.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Brown was arrested by a Hancock County sheriff’s deputy in April after reports of a van driving erratically at high speed on U.S. 40 in the western part of the county. Brown, who had two children younger than 3 years old in the vehicle, appeared to be impaired, the affidavit stated.

Earlier in the day, the sheriff’s department had responded to a report of a burglary at a residence in the 8000 block of East U.S. 40. The victim identified Brown as a person of interest in the crime.

From there, a deputy on the scene was able to retrieve from the van the items stolen in the burglary, the report said.
