GREENFIELD – Flames were shooting from three windows in an upstairs apartment above a popular downtown restaurant when firefighters arrived around 5 a.m. today (May 2).

Within 20 minutes, firefighters from the Greenfield Fire Territory had extinguished the flames in the building in the first block of West Main Street, which houses Hometown Classic Pizza on its first floor, public information officer Corey Breese said.

No one was injured in the blaze, which officials said started due to smoking. While one person was home when the fire broke out, he was able to get out and was not injured. His cat, however, died in the blaze.

The restaurant, which had undergone major renovations last year, suffered significant water damage. The establishment will be closed while its owners assess the damage, the restaurant said in a post on social media.

Breese said the apartment space was a total loss. Other structures in the block suffered smoke damage, Breese said.

Breese said the fire could have been a lot worse had crews not reacted as quickly as they did.

“We’ve had some bad downtown Greenfield fires, and this could have been one of those, but our crews jumped on it really fast,” Breese said.

Fire crews from Sugar Creek Township and Buck Creek Township Fire Departments assisted on the call. A ladder truck from the Indianapolis Fire Department was called off as soon as officials from Greenfield were able to get control of the fire.
