HANCOCK COUNTY — The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department swore in two new deputies this week.

Barbara Miers, 31, and Aaron Forshey, 27, both took their oath for the office from Sheriff Brad Burkhart, who told the two new deputies it was close to 30 years ago that he also joined the department as a young deputy.

“We’re proud of both of them,” Burkhart said.

Both Miers and Forshey have worked their way up through the department, starting at the Hancock County Jail. They became supervisors at the jail before applying for the merit deputy program and going through the evaluation process.

“They’re both very well qualified and are going to do well,” said Maj. Bobby Campbell, chief deputy of the sheriff’s department.

Both will now go through 400 hours of department training with another deputy on the road. They also will spend spend 15 weeks at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

Miers, whose husband is an Indiana state trooper, started working for the Sheriff’s Department in 2017 after spending 11 years working for the Marion County Jail after graduating from Lawrence North High School.

“When I got here to this department, I knew this is where I wanted to have a career,” she said.

Forshey, who grew up in Spiceland, attended Knightstown High School. He joined the sheriff’s department in 2015 after graduating from Ivy Tech, where he studied law enforcement. He has also worked as a reserve officer with the Greenfield Police Department.

“Growing up, I thought I’d be in business with my father,” Forshey said. But, after meeting his future wife in 2012 and becoming a new stepdad, Forshey said, he wanted to serve the community.
