GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central Cougars baseball team didn’t even have to step on the diamond Friday night.

While their doubleheader with Shelbyville was postponed, Pendleton Heights was on the field, losing both games of a doubleheader with Delta. The Arabians and Cougars entered Friday tied for the Hoosier Heritage Conference lead, and the Pendleton Heights losses meant Greenfield-Central clinched a share of the HHC title.

That wasn’t good enough.

The Cougars traveled back to Shelbyville on Saturday needing one win to claim the conference all to themselves. They got two, blowing out the Golden Bears in Game 1, 9-1, and hanging on for an 11-7 win in the second game.

Greenfield-Central effectively clinched the conference title in the third inning of Game 1, when Brady Mundell, Bradley McDowell and Jacob Hauser all had RBI hits, pushing across six runs.

The Cougars finished the regular season 17-7 and 11-3 in the HHC, two games ahead of Pendleton Heights and New Palestine. They open sectional play Thursday at Pendleton Heights, facing county rival Mt. Vernon in a 7:30 p.m. opening-round game.
