Softball

Dragons dominate Zionsville

New Palestine took to the road Wednesday for a non-conference game against Zionsville, quickly earned a big run-rule win, 21-1.

Zionsville took a 1-0 lead after one inning before the Dragons offense came to life, scoring four runs in the second before breaking it open with eight in the third. 

Jaylin Calvert has a second-straight game with home runs, going 4-5 at the plate with four RBIs. Michaela Jones also had four hits, driving in two runs. Emily O’Connor had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four RBIs. Kaylea Bullock had two hits and two RBIs, and eight other Dragons registered base hits in the win.

On the mound, sophomore Sam Booe threw four innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five. Freshman Katie Kottlowski pitched for the second straight day, throwing the fifth inning and striking out two while allowing no hits.

Royals fall to Lapel

A big fifth inning led to a run-rule loss for Eastern Hancock on Wednesday, as Lapel scored 10 runs in the frame to pull away for a 14-2 win.

The Royals were held to just three hits, with Dylan Bates getting two and Landon Kintner one. 

Andy Locker pitched three innings for Eastern Hancock, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out two. Jakob Harris and Chris Craney each allowed five runs, and Kyle Lacy pitched 2/3 of an inning and didn’t allow a hit.

Dragons fall on road

New Palestine dropped a 160-177 decision Wednesday at Ironwood against Hamilton Southeastern.

Chris Guhl was the low Dragon with a 41. Quinn Dobbins and Josh Shinkle each shot 44. Matt Barada added a 48.

Girls tennis

Marauders take first loss

Mt. Vernon lost for the first time this spring on Wednesday, dropping to 3-1 overall with a 5-0 loss to Delta.

The Eagles won all five positions in two sets, with Marauders No. 2 doubles duo of Lexi Shelton and Maddie Swingle having the most competitive match, falling 6-7(5) in the first set before an 0-6 second set.

Royals get tri split

Eastern Hancock hosted North and South Decatur on Wednesday, with the Royals boys winning with 90.5 points – South Decatur had 45 and North Decatur 20.5 – and the girls finishing in second, with North Decatur (70) winning, Eastern Hancock (62) in second and South Decature (24) in third.

Cole Rainbolt won the 100 and 200 meters and the long jump for the Royals. Skyler Schrope won the 1,600. Zach Arnold picked up a win in the 400. Skyler Sexton won the 300 hurdles. Cayden Sotelo got the win in the 800 meter, Nick Edwards in the 3,200 meter and Gabe Lawler won the shot put.

The Royals relay teams also picked up wins. The 4×800 was Daniel Campbell, Edwards, Sotelo and Schrope; the 4×100 winners were Arnold, Sexton, Rainbolt and Blayze Sarber; and the 4×400 team of Schrope, Landon O’Neal, Houston Swan and Sexton all earned victories.

The Eastern Hancock girls had several victories. Chloe O’Neal won in the 100 meter, Lili Hunt won the discus, Aly Spaulding won the long jump, Ashton Willis won the 3,200 and the 4×100 relay team of Sydney Janes, Lexi Lewman, Spaulding and O’Neal also picked up a win.

Cougars, Marauders compete

Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon competed in Wednesday’s Noblesville’s Women’s Invitational, with the Cougars finishing in fifth and the Marauders earning an eighth-place result.

Audrey Brinkruff won the 3,200 meter run for Greenfield-Central, breaking the school record in that race for the second time in the last week. The Cougars also had four runner-ups, with Kenzie Polster finishing second in the high jump and Hannah Burkhart finishing second in the discus.

The Marauders had one second-place, finish, with the 4×800 relay team of Rylie Pearson, Morgan Tharp, Rilee Hartman and Kamryn Eason finishing as runner-up.
