FORTVILLE — Fortville Elementary School (FES) fourth graders made use of their STEM knowledge to create a replica of the town of Fortville out of graham crackers, frosting and other yummy building materials. The Fortville Gingerbread Town project gave five fourth-grade classes an opportunity work collaboratively in recreating their town out of munchies. Each class was assigned an area of the town to develop, and then pairs of students were assigned a specific building.

Students recreated several restaurants out of graham crackers such as Mozzi’s All-Star Pizza, Sunrise Bakery and Foxgardin Kitchen and Ale. Other structures included a water tower that actually pumped water, Mt. Vernon High School, Mt. Vernon Middle School and Memorial Park in their project.

Each Fortville building had a QR code that led to a student-made report, as well as a handmade circuit that turned on a street light. Through the project, students used skills from the disciplines of social studies, language arts, science, art and math.

Teachers hope to expand the project next year by bringing in speakers from each Fortville business to share the history of their building with the classroom, teach supply and demand and interact with the students constructing their building.
