Eastern Hancock 4-H and FFA students compete statewide

WEST LAFAYETTE — FFA and 4-H members from Eastern Hancock school district recently competed in the State Crops and Forestry Career Development Events at Purdue University.

The Crops team of Ryan Kihlstrum, Loren Matlock, Hannah Rodgers and Zach Sickle earned State Champion team honors in the 4-H division. Sickle received top individual honors, while teammates Matlock and Rodgers placed fourth and seventh, respectively. The team of Jack Arnold, Jackson Beaudry, Caden Hancock and Kegan Kendall placed 13th in the FFA division; the team of Kaylyn Joyce, Elly Parker, Nick Potts and Kolten Synesael placed 14th in the FFA team competition.

In the Junior division, the team of Wyatt Arnold, Boaz Dixon, Luke Schilling and Garrett Shaw were the fifth-place overall team, with Schilling placing third individually.

Students in the Crops contest are required to identify crop plants and seeds, weed plants and seeds, insects, and diseases and damages of crops. Also, members are required to complete grain grading problems and take a written exam about agronomy knowledge.

The Forestry team of Caitlin Cox, Hailey Hedrick, Cassondra Watson and Paige Wickard earned State Runner-Up team honors in the 4-H division. Wickard was fifth individually in the contest, and teammate Hedrick placed seventh individually. The team of Dominic Bova, Kinley Broadwater and Claire Johnson received third-place team honors in the junior division. Broadwater was the fourth-place individual in the junior contest.

Students in the Forestry contest are required to identify leaves, seeds and woods. In addition to identification skills, members are required to take a written exam about forestry knowledge.
