HANCOCK COUNTY — One person was killed in an accident on Interstate 70 west of Greenfield during the weekend as the area confronted the first major snowfall of the season.

The crash happened just before 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon on westbound I-70 near the 100-mile marker, which is near the CR 200W overpass, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department reported.

No details about the crash have been released, including the name of the victim or details on the cause of the fatal crash. Sgt. John Perrine, the state police public information officer, could not be reached for comment before the Daily Reporter’s deadline on Monday.

The interstate was shut down for several hours as emergency crews responded to the accident. Westbound traffic diverted onto State Road 9.

The accident was part of a wild day on streets, roads and highways. Indiana State Police responded to a total of 121 crashes and 34 slide-offs statewide, with 10 crashes resulting in injuries.

Locally, Hancock County safety officials were also busy with multiple slide-offs and accidents throughout the storm. However, no serious injuries were reported.

Hancock County and most of the state was under a travel advisory well into Sunday as officials warned against unnecessary travel.

Seven to 8 inches of snow fell in Hancock County, which was a record for the date.
