Mt. Vernon alum set for nationals

Lee University junior Christian Noble, a standout runner who graduated from Mt. Vernon in 2016, is competing in this weekend’s 2018 NCAA Division II Championships in Slippery Rock, Penn.

While his team advanced with a second-place finish in a regional conducted in Lakeland, Fla., Lee was the individual winner at the regional, posting a 10K time of 31:19.17. He finished 25 seconds ahead of second place.

Hall of Fame seeks nominations

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters are seeking nominations for the 2019 class of the Eastern Hancock Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame recognizes the achievements of former athletes, teams, coaches, administrators, and other contributors to the athletic programs at Eastern Hancock, Charlottesville, Westland and Wilkinson High Schools.

To be eligible, an athlete must be seven years removed from competition, coaches five years and teams 10 years. Nominations are due by the end of school on Dec. 21. The 2019 Hall of Fame class will be recognized at halftime of the Eastern Hancock-Union County boys varsity basketball game on Jan. 26.

Marauders athletes earn weekly honors

Mt. Vernon had a pair of basketball players honored for their play last week.

The Marauders’ Lexi Shelton was named a Hoosier Heritage Conference Player of the Week after a 23-point game against Hamilton Heights. She was 7-of-10 shooting and 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the win. Shelton also was nominated for District 2 Player of the Week.

The Marauders girls have moved up to No. 14 in the latest Class 4A poll.

Mt. Vernon’s Peyton Meadors joined Shelton in being nominated for District 2 Player of the Week by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Meadors averaged 19.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last week in helping the Marauders to a 1-1 start to the season.
