Girls soccer

Cougars cruise to shutout

Greenfield-Central started off quickly against the Shelbyville Bears on Thursday en route to a 5-0 win.

Lucy Brand struck early on a long free kick. Anne Marie DeKeyser and Rita Aguye-Cots also put in first-half goals. The Cougars controlled possession in th second half, holding the Bears to two shots on goal for the game. Emma Reinner scored first in the second half and Macy Huber ended the scoring for the Cougars.

Kelsi McLaughlin, Anne Marie DeKeyser (2), Lucy Brand and Alex Rupley had assists. Schyler Slunaker earned her fourth shutout in a row.

Dragons get victory

New Palestine got back into the win column Thursday with a 3-0 shutout of Warren Central.

The game was scoreless until halftime. After some adjustments, the Dragons broke through in the second half. Olivia Lambdin put away a penalty kick after a handball in the box.

Maddy Miller put away the second goal with a goal from the box. Victoria Crowder provided some insurance by dribbling around the Warrior defense and putting the ball into the far-post side netting to finish off the victory.

The Dragons were strong defensively. Haley Weinrich and Riley Moss shared the shutout. 

Tennis

Royals fall to Knightstown

Eastern Hancock was swept at home Thursday, falling to Knightstown 5-0.

The Royals lost in two sets at each position. They are now 3-9 on the year.

Dragons top Chatard

New Palestine finished its regular season Thursday with a 3-2 victory at Chatard, capping a 14-3 regular season.

Matthew True and Carson Gavin gave the Dragons two quick victories, each winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Ben Blachly and Dane Reid rallied from a tough first set to win 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 to win the clinching third point for the Dragons.

Marauders win on road

Mt. Vernon swept past Muncie Central on Thursday, 5-0 on the road.

J.D. Cohee won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Chris Hays won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Sam McCarty won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Braeden Browning and Peyton Meadors won 6-2, 6-3, and the No. 2 doubles team of Jackson Dunlavy and Sam Frye won 6-0, 6-0.

Cougars swept by Whiteland

Whiteland topped Greenfield-Central on Thursday night, 5-0.

Mason Bussel and Collin Hunt played a competitive match, but ended up 1 game shy of winning a crucial set. The pair ended up losing 5-7, 3-6 in the closest match of the night.

Volleyball

Dragons fall to champs

New Palestine pushed defending 3A state champion New Castle to four sets Thursday at the New Castle Fieldhouse.

The Dragons eventually fell 23-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-13 to the powerful Trojans, who have won 17 straight matches.

Marauders sweep Wildcats

Mt. Vernon beat Lawrence North in three sets Thursday in a home non-conference match.

The Marauders won 25-20, 25-23, 25-14 to improve to 13-5 on the season.

Royals lose at home

Eastern Hancock dropped a home match Thursday, falling to Monroe Central.

The Royals lost in three sets, 18-25, 20-25, 16-25, to fall to 7-15 this year.

Cougars top Crusaders

Greenfield-Central rolled to a quick road win Thursday, topping Scecina in three sets.

The Cougars won 25-17, 25-13, 25-22. They are now 14-8 this season.
